Noises with a smile

What is laughter? Is it when you make noises while smiling? If so, Jack is laughing. It's too early for him to laugh, I realize, but he says things like "heh heh" while smiling, so it looks an awful lot like laughter. Of course, he says things like "heh heh" when he's not smiling, too, and sometimes when he's about to lose it and have a total meltdown, so it could just be a coincident occurence of a noise and a facial expression, but I prefer to think that he's laughing.

Especially when he wakes up at 5am and won't go back to sleep for the rest of the morning, and Danny is out of town so I can't foist him off on his daddy for a precious few more hours of sleep. He really has been sleeping very well lately, so I shouldn't be complaining, but I just kept hoping I could crawl back into bed and kept getting my hopes dashed every time I set him down. He was also just being so cute I couldn't take my eyes off him, and there's something about the noises he makes that melts away my resentment at being awake. I had never been a morning person until a gurgling baby entered my life. Once I gave up on sleep, I tried and tried to record the "laughing" so you could see what I mean, but there's nothing like a camera to force complete silence on this kid. Literally, I take it away, he chatters up a storm. I bring it back, he immediately shuts up. It would be intriguing if it weren't so frustrating.

So Danny is at a bachelor party this weekend and as soon as I finish this I'm heading down to San Jose to spend the weekend with my grandma, but last night I spent the night alone with Jack for the first time. That was quite a milestone. I still remember so clearly the night we went home from the hospital, and how as we were putting the baby in the car, I thought, "Why are they letting us do this? Don't they know we have no idea what we're doing?" What a long way I've come in two months! Jack and I had a great little sleepover. We made ice cream and had a chocolate-cherry sundae (well, I did, at least, and he got it in distilled form a few hours later). We snuggled on the bed and watched a chick flick and he didn't complain at all. How many more years will I be able to do that with my little boy? Probably not enough, no matter what the answer is.

OH MY GOD! I just noticed for the first time how much Jack look like you, Becky! Even Chris said so! How very cool!

Oh, and one more thing... M made me get up at 5am for three years and I thought it was insane that I had to be awake with him before the sun was even up, but now the kid sleeps in until 9am every day! So, I guess, if you just wait a while, you will be able to sleep in the morning again some day! Yay!
