Jack meets #2

Jack had a very special visit to the doctor's office today. I think it was his favorite visit to a doctor's office ever, because not only did it not result in him being poked with any needles, but he got to meet his little brother or sister for the first time. I guess technically the first time was a few weeks ago, but back then it was just a little bean with a heartbeat. Now it really looks like a baby.

The technician gave us a life-size model of what the baby looks like right now, just a few centimeters long, but otherwise perfectly babylike, and Jack grabbed onto that thing and wouldn't let go. He kissed the baby, had daddy kiss the baby, demanded to be held closer to the bed so mommy could kiss the baby, and alternately told the baby to "sit!" as he placed it on the bed and then picked it back up again announcing "baby!" in case we hadn't noticed.

And we hadn't even gotten to the good part yet. Jack has recently gotten very savvy with video. He knows that the t.v. is where the fish live and the computer is where he can talk to mommy when she's away. So it didn't take him long to connect the baby he was holding with the one on the screen above him, which we kept telling him was in mommy's belly. I think he actually got it. I think there was a moment where it really clicked, from which point on he excitedly told us, "baby! baby! baby! baby! baby!" as he pointed at the screen, pointing more emphatically every time the baby moved or the ultrasound shifted angles. It was pretty adorable. I hope he's that excited when the baby leaps off the ultrasound screen and into the real world (that's certainly a Millennial Generation understanding of where babies come from, isn't it).  Technology is changing so fast, it's changed even since we got Jack's ultrasounds. They used to give you these little pixelated print-outs, to do what with I'm not sure, put in your baby book I guess. Now they ask you, "do you have a memory stick?" And thanks to the fact that daddy was a boyscout and always comes prepared, we got to take all the digital images home with us, including some video.

Here is baby's face.

And here is baby in profile, arm and leg and even ribs clearly visible.

There are lots more, but I think that's the best one. Although we did get an adorable view of baby's feet, I can't find that one in the set of images. I guess it didn't get recorded. It's okay, though, because we know baby has ten perfect toes and in a little over six months we'll be able to kiss them.

And here's a video of baby pushing her hair back over her ear. (I know I don't know it's a girl, this just strikes me as a feminine gesture. Also my sister said it was going to be a girl and she's never wrong.)  I love it.

What we didn't get, because I am not smart, is a photo of Jack looking at these images. He was enraptured. Next time I have to remember to bring the camera. September 28, we'll know if Jack's getting a little brother or a little sister! We're going to find out this time, because we did it the other way last time, and it seems like if you're going to have two you should try it both ways. So stay tuned!
