The F2 Generation

Our college friends are starting to have babies. Or maybe they are not starting so much as have started and are continuing to. It is a strange thing to realize that the way we interact in the future will probably be to hang out and watch our kids play with each other. It's remarkably fun, it turns out. Today we went to visit our friends Mandy and Dunagan and their 12-day-old baby, Anna.

The little cutie in the green shirt giving Jack a smooch is Elise, Rico and Monika's daughter (Rico and Dunagan were groomsmen at our wedding). She will be 2 in May. Jack likes older women. But he looks out for the younger ones, too. The one time Anna started to cry, Jack let loose with a wail to bring the whole house down (right after I snapped that photo on the bottom right-- can you tell he looks concerned?). He wanted to make sure that we all knew that he was displeased that the baby was sad. It's funny, all of a sudden Jack has started to get very anxious when someone gets hurt or distressed (or appears to, even if they are in fact just enjoying a sled ride down a hill). I wonder what switch turns on in the brain for a kid to say, hey, that's not right, somebody's upset and that makes me extremely uncomfortable. Maybe he's just going to be a sensitive guy. That, combined with those eyelashes and those dimples, will really make him a lady killer.

It is reassuring to see the happy, healthy "next generation" of your friends. Mazel tov to them all.

Maybe all these F2s can be sort of cousins to one another. That makes it so much nicer when you get together with friends and the kids have someone to play with rather than begging for your attention constantly.

Elise has such a crush on Jack! Look at her with her arm around him and smooching all over him. Man, watch out.
