first steps

It's happening. My baby is on the cusp of being a toddling toddler. I thought he might have taken a step last weekend, but then he didn't do it again so I kind of thought I imagined it. Then last night, I had witnesses-- Tuesday Mom was over and can vouch for the fact that he definitely took two steps. And tonight, he was on a tear. Danny was peeling oranges for dessert and Jack adores oranges, so he kept mooching around the table, opening his mouth and clapping, leading Danny to remark that our darling boy has now graduated to trained seal status. Just to prove his daddy wrong, Jack turned toward me, orange still in mouth, grinning, and started walking. He got halfway to my chair from where he'd started at Danny's, then stopped, as though suddenly realizing he wasn't holding on to anything, and then started bouncing up and down in glee. He was dancing, or celebrating, or something. Eventually he sunk to a crouch, then dropped to all fours and crawled away, squealing in delight. He did this a half dozen more times, each time with the bopping and the squealing (he really understood how cool this was and was proud of himself, I think) before we finally washed the sticky orange off our hands and went to get the camera.

Helpful tip: when filming your son's first steps, it might be a good idea to get footage of his feet, so you can actually see the stepping in question. Just a thought. But who am I to criticize, none of the video I took (and I took a lot) managed to catch him doing it on his own. I did get the bopping, though.

Still can't see the feet! Oh well, he'll be doing it lots more from here on out (like the rest of his life), so there will be plenty of more opportunities coming up to capture it.

If the photo/video shots left something to be desired, you did a fantastic job of graphically describing the "traveling steps" Jack took. Thanks for the sharing.
