Eight (months) is enough

I didn't think I'd get to the point of saying Jack can stop growing up now so soon. That seems like something the parents of eight year olds say. Not eight month olds. But he is so much fun right now and it's going by so fast, I wish he would just stay this way for a little longer.

Today to celebrate his birthday, Jack and I watched all the videos I've taken of him to date. It turns out he LOVES to watch himself. I'm not sure he realizes it's himself, but he definitely gets that that's a baby on that computer screen, and that baby is having fun. There's one of him bouncing on a bed that brought shrieks of delight. I'm not sure I really understood what was meant by "peals" of laughter until today. I really wanted to get a video of him watching videos to post tonight, but unfortunately I didn't have enough hands. I had to hold him while he was watching, otherwise he would get distracted and try to eat
he computer. So I decided to wait until Danny got home, but by that time he was a little cranky (Jack, not Danny) and was no longer in the mood for video watching. So I don't have a meta-video. But you can watch all the videos that Jack enjoyed so much here. (I also put a new link to youtube in the side bar on the right because google video just wasn't doing it for me anymore.)

I also failed to get any cute photos of Jack today. This is not because he failed to be cute, but rather, because I was enjoying it too much to get behind the camera. The best I can do is an off-center family portrait from yesterday, ri
ght before we harvested the corn and whacked it down.We had just come back from Danny's farm tour at Frog Hollow, where he invited all the CSA members to come have lunch and a looksee around the farm. You probably can't tell from the photo, but Jack was in his special farm onesie just for the occasion. I guess we were inspired by our trip out to Brentwood (which is known almost as well for its corn as for its peaches) because we came home from a big day and, instead of collapsing on the couch, headed straight out to the garden. We must have 100 ears that we have to figure out what to do with now. Maybe 200. I genuinely feel like I might be underestimating. One thing we already know works well: corn chowder. Danny made some the other night and it has become Jack's favorite food to date. I think it's the bacon fat.

So lots continues to go on here. Sorry I don't do a better job recording it. I don't know who I'm apologizing to. Myself? My sister? A future Jack? At any rate, happy birthday, kiddo. Another month, another many milestones. You're almost crawling, babbling lots, and eating enough to make your daddy proud.

That reminds me, Danny came up with some kind of poem tonight:

Strong, brave Jack.
Watcher of cats.
Chewer of wombats.
Eater of peaches.
Sucker of own toes.
Snorer of... air.

Yes, that's our boy.

Wonderful blog. Thank you, Becky, for taking the time to share your feelings and Jack's special day. Bill and I talked earlier today of it being another "Month-iversary" for Jack, and his parents.

Happy M'day, Jack. We love you three.

I love the poem - and the corn picture. He sure is an amazing boy. I have never met such a happy eight month old - and I thought M was a happy baby. Not compared to Jack!
P.S. I LOVE corn chowder. If you feel like freezing some until I visit, I wouldn't mind! :)
