Sitting up

We're now sitting up with just a little bit of help. Sometimes things get a little too exciting, and we keel forward or to the side in attempts to grab something just out of reach and/or to test out the ground with our nose, but more or less, we are sitting! How very impressive.

And we're not just sitting up, we're rolling over! I've yet to see this happen (Danny has), but I've left him thrice on his back and come back to find him on his belly, not entirely pleased with his new situation. He'd been kicking his legs over and craning his neck to look around behind him for a few weeks now, but the arm pinned beneath him always seemed to put the brakes on a full barrel roll. No longer!

And then there's the bouncy chair, which we've been fearing would be too small for him any day now for about a month. Rather than outgrow it, however, he's learned to bend his legs and wedge his feet against the bottom to give himself leverage, then kick his pelvis up off the seat (no matter how tightly we buckle him in, he always manages to find some wiggle room) to instantly launch himself into turbo bounce mode. Smart kid. If you came to visit in the first three months, you might remember us bouncing the chair for him. No longer. There was the brief period where he'd learned that by swinging one arm like a manic conductor or strung out pitcher he could get the thing moving. But that was much slower. Now we're in the fast lane.

Sitting, rolling, and bouncing. I had a dream a few weeks ago that Danny had left the side of the crib on its lower setting and Jack had crawled right out of the crib and was crawling around the bedroom. In the dream it seemed less remarkable to me that Jack was crawling at 4 months than that Danny had left the side down. Any bets on when he actually will start crawling? They say babies don't crawl anymore, because they don't spend enough time on their tummies. They also say babies always roll from tummy to back to start out. Danny retorts, "If we didn't know by now that he was not your typical baby, I'm not sure we've been paying attention."

I'm not sure about the tummy to back roll first - that doesn't seem right, but the "babies don't crawl anymore" is just an exaggeration (IMHO). All my kids crawled for exactly three weeks before they walked. Three whole weeks. See, they DO crawl. Just not for very long.

If you show him how to put one arm outstretched straight ahead of him and gently tip him to that side, the weight of his head will carry him over to his back. Then he can get off his tummy and back onto his back. I showed Thomas a couple of times and he figured it out for himself after that.
